Modernist Gates - Stanmore & Petersham

Blues Point Tower - McMahons Point North Sydney

Built in 1962 & designed by architect, Harry Seidler (and Associates), Blues Point Tower has 24 levels and stands at 83 metres tall.
As a singular building, it really stands out, just the other side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge by ferry but Seidler had originally proposed a 29-building apartment development when council zoning laws were being changed.

Erskineville on the edge - the Zenix apartments

a new day and a closer look at the Metroland Zenix development Erskineville, next to St Peters Park - 224 units completed in 2003 for $80 million.
I think it's an improvement on their 1996 Pyrmont development, which frankly looks like the brightly painted East Berlin buildings situated a street or two east from where Checkpoint Charlie stood - very bland.
Zenix is curiously attractive on a good day.

While waiting for Heaven...

seeing as it's Easter, I thought I'd run with the theme & post this shot I took 4 or 5 years ago of Saint Mary's Cathedral on a sunny afternoon in Sydney.  It was built in 1868 (3 years after the first one burnt down... hmm who threw the lightening bolt then??) & is a good example of gothic revival architecture, designed by William Wilkinson Wardell.
I used a 1962 Ricoh fixed lens rangefinder that I'd scored for $20 - a big brick of a thing with the film advance lever on the bottom.  It lasted one roll of film (but is repairable - maybe one day...).  I included this image in my 2007 exhibition; Heaven (is looking up).

Wot's on in Woollongong then?

well I'm not there at the moment so I don't know but here's a nice art deco block of flats

image from about 2007 - AH & I hopped on a train down south from Sydney to Woollongong to be groupies at a gig & stayed in a really dodgy motel - not quite hire by the hour but the old used condoms on top of the wardrobe explained a lot.   It really smelt of toxic cleaner that should have been banned in this country (I ended up with a fume induced headache).  

However, next door to the motel was this wonderful building. 

It has since been sold and I am yet to see what happened to it but will do soon.

The only camera I had that day was a Lomo Fisheye - it doesn't have a viewfinder so I am extra pleased with this shot.

Taking a shortcut home

Not quiet Harry Seidler* - well, not at all really.., bar the little windows and that it's white but it's the thought that counts.
I came across this nonetheless interesting spot on a shortcut home via the grounds of Sydney University Camperdown.  One of the best shortcuts a person could take - there is much to be viewed in the grounds of this 150 year old university, which I will revisit in this blog.
